It’s well-known fact that today our world
gets an environmental damage. The damage can brightly be seen from various
environmental issues such as wildfire, drought, animal extinction, and global
warming. The world agrees that those environmental matters are mostly caused by
human activities. Discerning this phenomenon, all layers of the society must
take a part to be responsible especially government and academia. The
government of Indonesia represented by the minister of research, technology,
and higher education has encouraged the academia to actualize the concept of
eco- friendly campus named green campus[1].
Toward this idea, we are required to take in about the sense of green campus
and to succeed it withal various efforts.
The sense of green campus isn’t about the
green colour of campus’ building, but more importantly it’s about the natural value
and environmental insight inside the campus. Campus as place for civics
academia must be the spot to integrate environmental science into management,
policy, and practices[2]. Recently
this programme is conducted by a huge amount university in all over the world. Broadly
the aim is to attempt at mitigating the effect of global warming and also to
embody all layers of civics academia about preserving and taking care of our
nature. The idea of green campus must rateably go forward with the proper
concept to produce long term outcomes. Furthermore, the proper construct of
green campus must be contrived by a crowd of expert, worked out by all layers
of civics academia, and supported by university policy and management. The
contrivance can be started from establishing an environmental team, conducting
seminar about environmental preservation, designing the eco-friendly parking
area, and banning smoking in all campus areas.
Establishing an environmental team is the
first effort that university can do. This is a crucial and fundamental step due
to the long term outcomes that we want to achieve. Having the special
environmental team is expected to have more systematic and discipline
controller. The expert can place the members of the team into different jobs
like one person is taking responsible for preserving the nature and environment
of A building, two people are handling a trash bank, and others. The next,
conducting seminar becomes important since we know that seminar is one of the affective
ways to learn and to do campaign so that we can together encourage all the
civics to care about environmental preservation. The subsequent, bringing the
design of eco-friendly parking area into reality must be considered due to the
fact that in some universities of developing country they still have improper
parking area. The proper parking area will definitely make the condition nicer
and make everything more efficient. The following effort is prohibiting smoking
to all civics academia as the heading to reduce air defilement and emission
gas. This policy must come with the risk and punishment for those who break
this rule. The last, we also must make personal attempt in succeeding green
campus like bringing our own tumbler and throwing the rubbish in the right
place. Having own tumbler and not littering affect a lot in protecting our
earth because the obviousness shows that plastic trash is the most found trash and it’s included the bottle of mineral water.
Another fact tells that some scarce species of fish in Manado and Wawontulap
went dead because of partaking plastic trash in the sea[3].
It’s just how plastic trash can dangerously cause animal extinction. Based on
the research of Earth Hour Indonesia the trash of bottle plastic needs 450
years to be decomposed. It means when we bring our own tumbler we can decrease
the number of plastic trash and support the eco-friendly campus.
In conclusion, due to the reality that our
world is getting environmental crisis, all the communities especially from
civics academia must have awareness about the idea of green campus and its
practices. There are some stages that can be undertaken to succeed and bolster
the green campus programme as mentioned above. At last, it must be asserted
that nothing will change and protect our nature if we don’t set to the real
action today.
